Adopt-A-Highway

Florence County has a strong Adopt a Highway program with 41 active groups picking up litter along their stretch of highway at least three times each year. In 2002, these groups cleaned up 47 miles of highways and picked 9,345 pounds of trash.

Anyone who has a group interested in adopting a section of Florence County highways should contact Tom Fore, County Adopt a Highway coordinator at 843/665-3053 for more details.

For more information about the program, please visit the SC Department of Transportation's website. www.scdot.org/community/adoptahiway.html

Environmental Services also utilizes county inmate litter removal crews seven days a week. The program has cleaned up 390 miles of roadway in 2002 and removed 187,839 pounds of trash which includes 2,640 discarded tires.
