Florence County is located in the coastal plain of the northeast quadrant of South Carolina. The county seat, Florence, is the trade, industrial, medical, transportation, cultural, financial, and educational center of a nine-county region known as the Pee Dee. The region was named for the area once inhabited by the tribe of Indians known by the same name. Interstate 95 passes through Florence, and one of the endpoints of Interstate 20 is here. The city of Florence encompasses 12.1 square miles, while the county includes 805 square miles. The altitude ranges from 100 to 150 feet above mean sea level. Florence enjoys a moderate to subtropical climate with an average temperature of 64 degrees. Average annual rainfall is 43.98 inches.
