(Public Information Education Relations) Committee
South Carolina PIER Committee

About three years ago Florence County EMS sent four of our personnel to PIER training. There they came to understand the importance of good public relations and good public education. Since that time, two of our officers have trained to be PIER Instructors. Beginning with the hiring of our present Director, we are making a strong effort to meet the educational needs of our community, and to let the community know just what EMS is all about.

We have an on-going educational project in Florence County to go into the public schools with programs. We now have continuing education programs in many of the schools in Florence County. We cover grades K-12 and are presenting demonstrations on campus at Francis Marion University. Throughout the community at large we see about 25,000 people a year through demonstrations, classes, and presentations.

In December 2000 we held a press conference to kick off 3-D Month. We had speakers from MADD and from a victim's family to tell our listeners about her experience. Our job is to get the word out - to educate the public on seatbelt safety and child car seat use. Through education, perhaps we can save one life or keep just one more person safe in their seat belt. That is the purpose of PIER.
