This gallery of pictures is for education and information. While injuries are shown, there are no deaths to be seen, and we maintain a level beyond which we feel it is not appropriate to show here. Most of the pictures here could be seen on the TV news, or in the newspaper. Explicit pictures will not be shown, since we want this site to inform, and do not want younger viewers to be turned away.

December 2000 this accident on
a city road was almost
head-on, though the vehicles were
initially on opposite sides of the road.

This is the other vehicle. Though
the pictures are dark, you can see
the extreme damage that both
sustained. One driver hurt severely.

October 2000 This tractor trailer
was carrying a bin full of sand.
On a curve the truck went out of
control and rolled, throwing the
driver out the rear window.

October 2000 Tractor trailer and
large truck wreck. Almost a head-
on collision. Truck driver killed by
the load of rods going through cab.

Same accident scene earlier during
extrication. Here Cpl. Stiver Powell
provides treatment inside the
vehicle prior to removing patient.

Somehow a passenger came out
of this truck during the accident.
He was the only survivor.

Another angle of the truck. The
damage shown here makes you
wonder how anyone survived.

October 2000 Interstate
This car was struck from behind
and thrown off the road.
The occupants were thrown into
the back seat.

Here you have a better view of
just how far the rear of the car
was pushed up into the trunk
and rear seat area.

October 2000 This car was just
going too fast, when it was tapped
by another car. It simply rolled over.
FCEMS Medic 2, Florence Fire Department

EMS does not work alone. We
are all part of a team, with Fire,
Rescue, and Law Enforcement
all important to do the job.

Here Medic 3 and Florence Fire
Department remove a patient. This
is on the Interstate, a very busy
intersection. One second faster could
have proved to be fatal here.

September 28, 2000 Hostage
situation. Assailant shot child and
man, then shot himself before police
were able to make entry.

Here police officers are covering
FCEMS personnel as they try
to resuscitate the man that was
shot earlier.
Although these pictures seem to
show that EMS was in a hot zone,
the covering actions of the officers
were just a precaution. EMS did not
enter the hot zone until police were
sure that the assailant was down.
FCEMS stood by while attempts
were made to negotiate with the man,
they ultimately failed when he took his
own life. FCEMS tried to resuscitate
the assailant also, but failed due to
the extent of his self-inflicted injury.

August 2000 This Amtrak derailed
in a rural city. After triage, 21
people of 220 on the train were
transported to the hospital. The
rest were taken to a local shelter
to await transportation.

August 2000 This car was slowing
or stopped to make a U-turn on
Interstate. It was hit from the rear
at 70+MPH. Passenger suffered a
traumatic arrest. Child in what
remained of back seat was not hurt.

August 2000 This car was struck
from the rear so hard that the back
of the seat snapped. Patient is lying
with her head against the back seat.
Sgt. Parnell immobilizes her with
assistance from Florence FD.

July 2000 Here you see the wreck
as we saw it on arrival. Large SUV
struck guardrail, rolled, and then
flipped backwards. Patients ejected,
scraped up, but basically ok.

Here you see vehicle damage. The
3 patients were thrown to the far
side of the roadway, past the SUV.
EMS, Rescue and Fire work to
examine and treat the patients.

The rest of the story. The SUV
was towing a full-sized trailer, that
reversed direction and slid along the
guardrail. Imagine the sight to drivers
as the trailer spun on the road!

May 2000 Busy intersection results
in this car being struck. Driver was
seatbelted, airbag did not deploy
since impact was to side. Passenger
was ejected.

Another view. The door was taken
off as part of the extrication. The
driver had some abrasions, but was
saved by the seatbelt keeping her
off the bent-in parts of the car.
