Employment Opportunities at Florence County EMS - Updated 3-10-2008
Full Time Crew Member Positions are open

Florence County EMS is a department of Florence County government. As such, all applications for employment are processed through the Florence County Personnel Department. Applications are then forwarded to the appropriate department. Florence County is an equal opportunity employer, and abides by the provisions of the American Disabilities Act. All job requirements are subject to consideration of reasonably accommodating individuals with disabilities. The Personnel Department can be contacted directly at (843) 665-3054.

Florence County EMS responds to approximately 15,000 calls a year and currently operates 7 full-time ALS ambulances from 6 stations, staffed with a paramedic Crew Chief and a crew member EMT-Basic, Intermediate, or Paramedic. We also operate one paramedic in-house at a local Rescue Squad. Two Crew Chiefs per shift are Senior Crew Chiefs, and are in charge of a specific physical station across shifts. The majority of the Senior Crewchiefs have over 15 years in at the service. The Shift Supervisor is a Senior Paramedic who responds, as necessary backup, or to assume command over large scale operations. All Shift Supervisors have over 20 years in at the service. Also available for call-back are employees trained in Special Operations (SPECOPS).

The service is a progressive Advanced Life Support (ALS) system with liberal standing orders. Our main operations area is in Florence, a 7,500 square foot Headquarters, crew station, training facility, and central supply. We have a large substation in Lake City. Also there are stations in West Florence, East Florence on the campus of Francis Marion University, Pamplico, and Olanta.  In the West Florence area, the new station for Medic 3 opened September 10, 2004. The new Olanta station opened in November 2004.. The service and the employees are very active on the state, regional, and local level in areas of PIER, training, SC EMS Association, SC EMS Educators Association, and regionally with the Pee Dee Regional EMS Association. Employees are active in the community with public education, safety, EMS children's programs, and training of the general public. In-house training is based around the SC DHEC In-Service Training program for re-certification for employees who are EMT, EMT-I, or EMT-P's. In-house certification for training levels of provider and instructor in CPR, BTLS, PALS, PEPP, ACLS are provided as part of continuing education. The service is looking for motivated, self-starter, career oriented individuals.

Full time shifts on ambulances are a 24 hours on, 48 hours off, shift schedule. Paramedics stationed at rescue squads operate from 0700 - 1700 during the week. Part-time employees work no set hours, and are not guaranteed a minimum of hours at this time. Inservice training time for re-certification is mandatory, and is paid for.

If you were certified in another state, moved to South Carolina, and wish to obtain a SC EMT, EMT-I, or EMT-P certification to enable you to become employed? Documentation is available at for this, as well as other information related to these certifications in South Carolina on the SC DHEC Website.
