This drill occurred at Hoffman-LaRoche Carolina Plant. This plant is a large producer of pharmaceuticals, and does extensive research into new and experimental drugs and treatments. The potential for a hazard to occur is very great, and the nature of the research means that the items could potentially be unknown to the regular medical community. Stringent efforts to prevent contamination and control the scene are required on such incidents.

Units arrive on scene. Since there is
a visible plume, indicating danger,
no closer entry to the scene is made
at this time.
Firefighter units with SCBA arrive
and start setting up a Command
Post and Control Deployment
Point with EMS and other
arriving agencies.
A good Command Post has been
set up, with available power,
communications, and lighting
if the on-scene time is prolonged.
All entry to and from the scene
will flow past this point, to control
access, limit exposure, and
maintain accountability of patients
and property.
An area for suiting up personnel
into environmental isolation
suits has been set up. They will
be placed into protective gear here
and a set of baseline vital signs
will be taken.
The personnel entering the scene will
be closely monitored upon their
return from the scene. Their vital
signs will be compared to the ones
taken earlier, to see if there has
been any compromise in their
health, and they will be examined
for signs of contamination.
