Hazardous Materials for the First Responder Course, held at Florence
County EOC on 11-21-99
This course was held for members of agencies that routinely respond to accidents
or incidents in which hazardous
materials might be involved. There was instruction on recognition of hazards,
and safeguarding personnel and equipment.
We also were given some working examples of how to prevent further damage
to the public and the environment with
specific actions to be taken with specific hazardous materials.

In this series of pictures, our EMS employees show how fast
they can stop a leaking drum. The
only problem is that there are twice as many leaks as there are employees.
The Sheriffs Office
also showed us how they would do the same job. |

Here a field decontamination shower is
demonstrated. The person is inside a complete
chemical isolation suit, with an airpack for
breathing air.

Here Tebalt is placed in a thermal protection
suit. He knew that heat could not get in to him,
but neither could his body heat get out! He quickly
felt like a baked potato in aluminum foil. |
