FCEMS Headquarters, July 31, 2001
| Today, Jack Scholten, from Florence County MIS, installed one of the first pieces of hardware to allow FCEMS to move to a centralized paperwork and reporting system. Previously, computers in the FCEMS Headquarters were tied together in a local area network, that looped up to the Florence County Municipal Complex. All the data backups and email processing were actually stored there. This bottlenecked large file transfers, and allowed us to only keep small amounts of data backed up non-locally. Since future plans call for all paperwork to move to a paperless reporting and data entry system, the shifting of large quantities of information across the network would result in very poor performance for the other users. To avoid this, and to provide for future expansion, an in-house server was purchased. All data is backed up locally at high speed, and files can be centrally served from just down the hall, instead of across the network across town. If there is a power failure, all our data will still be available with power backups and our generator system, instead of going down when the lights go out as the past system did. Plans are under way for routine automated data backups from all units in house. This will be expanded to include the outlying stations as they are moved to a wireless network interconnect with Headquarters. |
