A PEPP (Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Providers) Class was held in the Training Room at FCEMS on February 10th and 11th. This was the first class in the Pee Dee area that was not for the instructors, and one of the first PEPP classes in South Carolina. PEPP is designed almost exclusively for the pre-hospital provider, versus other courses that are more clinical and hospital-care based.
The course was attended by FCEMS employees, others from different agencies, and even some from volunteer based providers. All the Shift Supervisors, as well as almost half the paramedics from one shift, attended the course on their days off work. Instructors were Major David Tebalt, Captain David Exum, Teddy Griffith, Buck Turbeville, and Craig Powell.

Here a group works through a scenario.
This one was given as a simple multiple birth.
However, the scenario gets a little more hectic
as the paramedic in charge finds that the
mother had no pre-natal care, and does not
even know when she is due to deliver. The
family is frantic, and all a little odd acting. Wyman
played the eccentric grandfather like he lives
the part.
Eddie's stress level elevates a little as Buck tells
him the first child is ok, but this second one is
cyanotic in the extremities and poorly responsive.
Is this normal in a multiple birth, or dangerous?
Peggy, holds the first child, while looking for any
signs of distress. The crew prepares to work
on the second child.
Here is another scenario. In this one, a 8 year
old child was struck by a car. The signs and
symptoms show there could be acute injury,
possibly being compensated for. But how
long till the child's system fails?
Here law enforcement (played by Wyman) enter
the scene and start trying to move everyone
around. Scenes can be chaotic, and EMS
must stay focused on the task at hand.
Fire Department arrives on scene, and also
becomes involved in patient care. We advise them
that we need a route cleared to provide a rapid
exit path. The child's respiratory quality has
indicated serious internal injuries.
Here the scene is really getting chaotic. I did
not realize that the plan was to get me rattled.
Unfortunately, it did not work, with all the
people on the scene, until Tebalt came in and
declared that he was Ernest Turner (a previous
EMS Director known for being a little loud at
times)
Here a discussion was running back and forth
rather heavily, as evidenced by the eyes looking
at three different places. But overall, a good
time was had by all.
