Inside Operations |

SPECIAL OPERATIONS There have been many changes at Florence County Emergency Medical Services over the last four years. Some of the major changes have included, de-centralizing of units, institution of military rank structure, completion of a new headquarters facility, paramedic supplied to Johnsonville Rescue Squad, almost total replacement of the ambulance fleet, a dedicated Professional Standards (training) officer, a dedicated Supply Logistics Officer, and the institution of a county wide Shift Supervisor who is not on an ambulance. The time has come for another major advancement. Florence County EMS is in the beginning stages of putting together a Special Operations Team. Already 16 employees have expressed interest in this team and the first meetings was held on April 2nd and 3rd, 2002. The Special Operations Team will be active in many areas, including rehab at extended or large fire scenes, assisting law enforcement at extended operations or serving high risk warrants, responding for medical support at Hazmat incidents. Participation on this team will require dedication and training. Our Director, Gary Horn, and Sgt. Ron Cain have already attended an EMS Special Operations course at the National Fire Academy. Cpl. Matt Morris will be attending an ALS Hazmat course at the National Fire Academy in August of this year. There will be other specialized training offered to team members in the future. This is an exciting time for Florence County EMS as we move into a new area of service to our communities. It is my hope that others will wish to join this team. As we progress standards will be set for those already participating and for those who wish to become a part of the team. If you would like information on becoming part of this team, or have ideas for other areas of service please contact me. Major David Tebalt |

| This is the first
year of our new EMS Explorers post. We have 7 active members and 10 of our
people, which help as they can. We meet each Tuesday night from 1900 to
2015. We are teaching the first responders course to the Explorers and
they are doing great. We visited The Central Dispatch Center on our first
field trip March 19th. We are already working on other trips and outings
for both training and to help EMS with some of the PR events.
It is my hope that our post will grow next year with many new and interesting young people that might just want to make EMS a life’s calling. Captain Chip Culbertson |
