  Florence County at a glance:

Florence County is located in the Pee Dee region in the eastern area of the state. Clarendon, Darlington, Dillon, Lee, Marion, Marlboro, Sumter, and Williamsburg Counties surround it.

Geologically straddling the Lower and Middle Coastal Plain, Florence County is in South Carolina’s northeast climatic region. Precipitation in 1997 in the region reached 51.03 inches; while the residents enjoyed an average temperature of 62.3 degrees.

In 1997, Florence County’s population numbered an estimated 124,379. The population grew 8% from 1990 to 1997. Based on 1990 census data, the population was composed of 60.8% white and 38.7% black. Females accounted for 52.9% of the population, and the median age was 32.2 years.

The labor force in Florence County rose from 61,180 in 1994 to 60,550 in 1996. The unemployment rate rose from 7.8% in 1994 to 8.4% in 1996.

Average monthly nonagricultural employment in Florence County in 1995 was 59,000. Retail and Wholesale Trades comprised the largest component with 14,600, or 24.7%; closely followed by Services with 13,000, or 22%.

In 1996, the per capita income in Florence County was $19,808, a rise of 12% from 1994’s per capita income of $17,630. This was 99.5% of the state’s per capita income of $19,898.
